In line with the Specific Objective 1.3 of the Call for Proposals, the project’s Overall objective is to “Contribute at enhancing the employment opportunities in the cross-border area by improving the
attractiveness and promoting tourism of the Vardar/Axios area”.

The historical and archaeological heritage is unique in the area and combined with the natural environment it can offer an extraordinary opportunity to boost the socio-economic and cultural development of the whole region. Since 2012, the site of Stobi is included in the World Monuments Fund Watch list among the sites with universal significance. Kilkis has been inhabited since the prehistoric era and in this region of Greece the rails of culture lead the visitor to significant archaeological sites. The action will enhance the attractiveness of important but less visited archaeological sites of the area as lever of touristic and economic development.

The project’s Specific Objective is indeed to “Enhance the attractiveness of the archaeological sites located in the Vardar/Axios area as lever of tourism development and employability”. The project contributes to address the needs and priorities identified by the Cross-border cooperation Programme: the protection and usage of cultural and natural heritage; the upgrade of touristic products and services; the horizontal and vertical networking among sectors that upgrade the touristic product (local products, gastronomy, cultural events); the involvement of the stakeholders and population to the development of the touristic sector to create employment opportunities; the creation of a joint touristic brand for the CBC area; the promotion of rural and winter tourism; the adoption of small interventions to use and create touristic attractions and events; the use of new technologies to promote tourism in the eligible area; the exchange of good practices.
