The Ephorate of Antiquities of Florina is a regional Service of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports. The Ephorate is authorized to collaborate with the Central Directorates of the Ministry and implements works included in the annual Action Plans. 

The Ephorate’s personnel is authorized to conduct systematic and rescue excavations, to implement studies and other archaeological works, to organize permanent and periodic exhibitions, to supervise the operation of archaeological sitesand museums according to the local needs.

The Ephorate of Antiquities of Florina is responsible for the preservation and protection of the prehistoric, classical, byzantine and post-byzantine antiquities of Florina Regional Unit, their documentation, conservation and presentation, the exhibition of the finds in Museums, the implementation  of archaeological studies and works, the restoration, rehabilitation, reconstruction and promotion of monuments and archaeological sites, the scientific study and publication of archaeological data and the management of monuments, archaeological sites, Museums and Collections.

More specifically, the Ephorate:
  • Conducts surveys and archaeological excavations and controls the archaeological sites and monuments under its authorization
  • Conducts extended rescue excavations at archaeological sites endangered by large-scale technical works and by the lignite-mining activity of National Power Corporation - S.A.
  • Tends for the restoration, storage and protection of the archaeological finds
  • Judges about the provision of permissions for technical works and supervises any digging activities in the region
  • Judges about the provision of permissions for filming and photographing of archaeological sites, monuments and Museums, about the study or transporation of archaeological material or sampling of ancient artefacts or monuments
  • Judges about the presentation of antiquities from Florina to exhibitions in Greece or abroad
  • Decides about the characterization of archaeological sites and monuments and for the establishment of protection zones
  • Provides free entry permissions to Museums and archaeological sites according to the regulations
  • Implements educational programs in collaboration with the Directorates of Elementary and Secondary Education and organizes periodic exhibitions and cultural events

  • Prepares proposals for the Central Archaeological Council, the Museum’s Council or the Local Monuments’ Council    
  • Participates in international and European programs and organizes seminars, workshops, conferences etc
