CPERI is classified among the Institutes of Excellence in Greece and employs a scientific staff of about 250 people, while its inflows is around to EUR 10 million €/year. In this light, the total budget of bioenergy and energy recovery projects by the utilisation of clean fuels is until now over 14 million €. Moreover, it holds the 16th position among the European Research Institutes (top 50 REC organisations) having signed grant agreements in FP7 in terms of counts of participations for the period 2007-2013.
CPERI conducts basic and applied research, develops innovative technologies and products in the following sectors:
1. Energy
2. Environment
3. Materials
4. Processes
CPERI targets emerging areas of future major industrial and commercial activities providing solutions to the challenges posed by large current trends (megatrends) associated with the “Energy of Tomorrow” and “Environment and Quality of Life”. The Institute’s efforts are focused on establishing sufficient conditions (infrastructure and collaborative innovation through organizing clusters) to support many viable options. Such options are Solar Fuels and related thermochemical technologies as well as their applications in vehicle technologies, transport etc.
CPERI carries out fundamental and applied research, emphasizing on development of novel products and services, such as:
- “Cleaner” coal pyrolysis/gasification and combustion technologies;
- Innovative environmental management methods, focused on CCS technologies, pollutants minimization and utilization of byproducts;
-   Energy exploitation of alternative fuel sources.
- Improvement of solid fuels utilization methods and techniques for energy production purposes, such as fuel quality control, “clean” coal technologies, co-firing, by-products utilization and land reclamation
- Investigation of the possibilities to develop new markets for solid fuels and related by-products
- Promotion of improved cogeneration technologies that are suitable for centralised and decentralised installations (e.g. gasifiers, production and use of hydrogen, fuel cells, etc)
- Development and optimisation of district heating and/or cooling systems
- Energy upgrade of buildings through application of Renewable Energy Sources
- Design of green buildings and green communities
- Development of Sustainable Energy Action Plans for municipalities

On March 30, 2012 Chemical Process Engineering Research Institute (CPERI) merged with Institute for Solid Fuels Technology and Applications (ISFTA) to establish the Chemical Process & Energy Resources Institute (CPERI). The new established Research Institute is a member of the Centre for Research and Technology-Hellas (CERTH). CPERI contributes to the increased competitiveness of the Greek and European industry by providing unique and innovative solutions to research problems of technological and/or commercial interest.
The development strategy of CPERI has been based on establishing strategic collaborations with leading international industrial corporations, developing strong links with Research Centres and Universities within the European Research Area (ERA) and contributing to the training of young scientists and engineers in state-of-the- art technologies. Acting as a catalyst of regional development Chemical Process Engineering Research Institute is also consistently pursuing strong interactions and collaborations with small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) in European network. On a national basis, the Institute provides also technical and consulting services to public organizations (e.g. the Greek Power Production Corporation, Ministry of Development), private investors in the power production and exploitation sector, as well as other market actors
