Municipality of Lagadas

Municipality of Lagadas is located at the North-East part of the Regional Unit of Thessaloniki, just 18 km from city of Thessaloniki and it was constituted in 2011 with the 3852/2010 Greek Law after the merger of the former Municipalities of Assiros, Vertsiko, Koronia, Lagadas, Soho, Kallindion and Lachanas. Its surface exceeds 1220 square kilometers and its population reaches 40.675 (2011 census).

The municipality has different characteristics than the rest of Regional Unit regarding its geographical morphology, economy, society and demographic elements. It is mainly a rural area with different development rate due to Vertisko Mountain and the Lake of Koronia.

Presentation of Municipality’s duties and activities:

The municipality handles tasks that can best be dealt with locally thanks to the close contact with the daily life of the citizens. The main areas that Municipality of Lagadas is dealing with are the following:

- Social Services (Health Care for poor and disabled persons etc.)
- Employment and Integration
- Local and Economic Development
- Agricultural Economic Development
- Employ and Unemployment Issues
- Tourism Development Issues
- Technology and Environment Issues

Furthermore, Municipality takes responsibility for the following activities:
a) To provide good government;
b) To provide services, facilities or other things that, in the opinion of council, are necessary or desirable for all or part of the municipality;
c) To develop and maintain safe and viable communities;
d) developing and evaluating the policies and programs of the municipality;
e) making sure that the powers, duties and functions of the municipality are appropriately carried out;
f) Carrying out the powers, duties and functions expressly given to it under this or any other enactment.
