The Region of Western Macedonia is one of the 13 Regions of Greece, it was installed with the Law 3852/2010, it is a self-governing regional public authority. It is sited in Kozani and consisted from the Regional units of Grevena, Kastoria, Kozani and Florina.
RWM has 412 permanent employees, is organized according to PD146/2010 in 6 General Directorate. It’ s main responsibility is to design, plan and implement policies at regional level in the framework of their powers, in accordance with the principles of sustainable development and social cohesion of the country, taking into account national and European policies.
The General Directorates are: Development Planning, Environment and Infrastructure, Rural Economy and Veterinary, Development, Transport and Communications, Public Health and Social Welfare.
Region of Western Macedonia covers a total surface of 9,451 km2, it has a total population of 283,689 inhabitants, it is considered to be the energy core of Greece, it has rich natural heritage including 11 ecotypes of the NATURA 2000 network, main economic activities are: agriculture, mining sites, electric power production, tourism and fur.
RWM has implemented a lot of cross - border, transnational and interregional cooperation programs and has the necessary experience and capacity to design, implement and coordinate EU funded projects. Thus, RWM holds sufficient “institutional memory” how to manage EU funded projects in accordance to the EU procedures and following internationally-recognised good practices. RWM employs many experts to cover all the necessary aspects within the planning of the Regional Operation Programme of Western Macedonia.
