COMETECH aims to be an innovative mean for introducing Continuity of Care aiming to: a) Support a collaboration between research teams from the two countries of scientists from different scientific fields to develop a common strategy for prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of Obesity, Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and Cardio Vascular Disease (CVD). b) Raise awareness of the local and national authorities regarding the above issues, and c) Inform the regional population on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of the above diseases.
The project will establish 4 e-health units -2 in each country- at isolated and deprived communities, collaborated each other. The establishment of the e-health units into three hospitals and the Nursing Department in ATEITH will allow affordable access to medical services within the cross-border area. These units (equipped by state-of-the-art medical devices, supported by an advanced software application and medical staff) will record data of local people and offer valuable and high quality medical care services. The records of the citizens using the COMETECH services will be safely and easily accessible by their physicians. The involved public bodies will be encouraged to use COMETECH services as a tool for introducing high quality continuity of health care in their respective regions.
The activities of the project will take place in the following regions;
a) In Thessaloniki (Department of Nursing in the ATEITh) one e-health unit will be installed and operated. Moreover, the Medical Association of Thessaloniki will support the awareness, education and dissemination activities. These include educational workshops in order to train specific target groups (patients with DM, Obesity and CVD and their family members, children, elderly people and high risk people).b) In Florina (Florina Prefectural General Hospital) one e-health unit will be installed and operated.
c) In Bitola / Region of Pelagonia (Clinical Hospital Bitola) the third e-health unit will be installed.
d) In Veles / Region of Vardar (General Hospital Veles) the fourth e-health unit will be installed.
All the above beneficiaries involved are located at the heart of the targeted areas, which are characterized by low rural population density, as well as, by the fact that they are mainly mountainous and not industrial areas. Additionally, the progressive increase of the incidence of DM, Obesity and CVD is a fact for the above areas. These particular characteristics of the project locations make the COMETECH project ideal for introducing the telemedicine paradigm implementation, especially in the area of Continuity of Care while its real contribution (e.g., in terms of the health of the isolated populations in the areas) will be immense.
